Probably the second best known song of the Fenian era, it tells the story of the rescue of two American Fenians, Kelly and Deasy, veterans of the Federal Army in the American Civil War, from a Prison Van in Manchester in 1867 and the subsequent execution of Allen, Larkin and O'Brien for the death of Constable Brett who was accidentally killed when the lock on the van was shot off. The Cork Renaisance Man Patrick Galvin sings here from an album he made around 1960.
