Sounds like a collaboration between Peter, Paul and Mary + Steely Dan. Trippy shit indeed and a composition that was probably deeper than what was necessitated by it's time slot and audience.

this is not the opening i remember as a kid.In the opening credits i rember it was Ruari that was holding the regins of the wagon and not O'Brien.

It certainly brings back some memories... it's just legendary, though I must say I found the intro a bit scary.... I was always a bit nervous when it would come on... even though I did enjoy it all the same... can someone tell me, what on earth were the owl-like head things on top of those Greek style pillars that seemed to be looking at the viewer just briefly?? that was well... weird...
