@usafvet100: Excellent explanation

@sol3a1 Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima, and completely ignore the intervening events, which actually had FAR more to do with Truman's decision than "revenge for Pearl Harbor." Ah, well, simple history for the simple-minded.
-
@sol3a1 The visceral reaction to the vid clip is understandable in a way, it depicts what can only be called a truly horrendous event. To those many who only got a shallow education about these events, and who probably slept through the history classes they actually did take, it's far too easy to come away from the vid with serious misconceptions. What appalls me is the collective amnesia that seems to have taken place between 12/8/41 and 8/05/45. People seem to think the Pacific war was

@sol3a1 Nothing easier than being a Monday Morning quarterback when nothing is actually riding on your decision. Truman didn't have that luxury, the buck stopped with him and EVERYTHING was riding on his decision.

@usafvet100: Why do they all start off with the same thing: "US Evil/Bad/Horrid/Bunch of Wankers/Not Nice" when it comes to the US dropping the bombs but utterly silent on how they'd do it or count up the deaths by different means had it been done their way

@FOTARAStheGREEK it over? That would have been interpreted as a sign of weakness and irresolution on the part of the Allies, and the Japanese would have used the time to strengthen their defenses against invasion. Continue the conventional firebombing raids that had begun in earnest on 3/09/45? Japanese cities were lightly constructed of wood and built to burn, these raids killed FAR more civilians than the nuke strikes. Those were Truman's options, which should he have taken?
-
@FOTARAStheGREEK have exercised to end the war in the Pacific? Invade with conventional weapons, perhaps? Japanese women and children were being trained to repel the invaders with bamboo spears, what would world opinion have been if our troops had been compelled to mow them down with far higher casualties than those seen at H and N? Besiegement/naval blockade? Famine and mass starvations in the millions would have resulted, much like Leningrad. Give 'em a few months to think
-
@FOTARAStheGREEK You didn't seem to be overly concerned about the distinct possibility of Greece going Bolshie back in the day, so I thought I'd mention it. Also the fact that nuclear deterrence was central to maintaining the peace during the Cold War. But to the point: am I to assume that you're labeling the H and N strikes as war crimes? Fair enough, lots of people would agree with you. But here's a question for you: What other option should newbie President Harry S Truman
-
@usafvet100 man you have completely misedthe point...this video here is for US's war crimes...what the fuck has USSR and cold war to do with that?...
Horrible what humans can do to each other.
R.I.P Those who died in Hiroshima and in Nagasagi for no real reason but the madness of war.

@normalizetheworld You completely misunderstood my statement, I was trying to say that revisionist historians often try to patch up the image of truly evil people and events from the past. Let me make my meaning plain: the holocaust did indeed take place, Joseph Stalin was one of the most bloodthirsty sociopaths to walk the Earth, and the IJA did indeed engage in truly barbarous acts against the natives of the lands they occupied. No amount of revisionism will change these
