Fire Investigator Chris Thompson and his accelerant detection K-9, "Ashes", will be showcasing their skills at 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Fire Station #6, 2620 W. Battlefield Road. Ashes, a black Labrador Retriever, is one of the newest accelerant detection dogs in the state of Missouri. Ashes and Chris completed the five-week canine-accelerant detection school that is certified by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. The program is funded by State Farm and is available to fire departments and law enforcement agencies across the United States. Since its beginning in 1993, the program has placed more than 200 dogs in 40 states, three Canadian provinces and the District of Columbia. Four of those dogs are currently working in Missouri and are located in Kansas City, O'Fallon, and Jefferson City, MO.
