Before I begin, you should take a look at the START signs if you haven't already. They're all very creatively designed, and they all look pretty cool. (The music here is awesome too.)

Dark Desert is my favorite course in the game. The Moon has settled itself in front of the Sun, plunging the land into an eclipse of darkness and triggering ancient mechanisms that split the ground in two. Here is where the pair of courses really diverge--the only thing you see in common between Dark Desert and Sand Ruins is the colosseum you start in, and even then the terrain changes dramatically.

The course itself is undoubtedly much tougher than Sand Ruins. The game begins with a very quick succession of four jumps, which come by so fast that it's near impossible to do tricks on them to maintain your speed. After a lot of sharp turns, it goes into this weird ancient hall with very strange gravity (again a foreshadowing of Zero Gravity's mechanics), and finally into a small Middle Eastern town filled with shortcuts.

You might also notice that I often take alternate paths in the first desert area just after the jumps. This is a shortcut you can only take if you're not in the lead; you have to ride the slipstream and go left where the arrows become big and purple. That takes you onto an alternate route where the 100-Ring monitor is located.

Shadow the Hedgehog is more than appropriate for a course like this! After all, the desert is dark only because it's entirely covered in shadow. He doesn't show up in the Story Mode, but people seem to like him so much that he's earned a spot in the Sonic Riders games.

The gear I have for him this time is the Darkness, which is just like the skates he's always been using, except powered by air. Because of that, he probably looks more normal than anyone else so far. It's too bad I never got to show him attacking, since seeing him use Chaos Control on his rivals is so cool.
