PLEASE READ THIS - This video was uploaded to Youtube specifically to embed in one my web pages about this film:
http://terrororstralis.com/sheena/tanya/tanya-plot.htm

This was first feature film about the blonde Fiction House jungle heroine to receive wide commercial release. Three episodes of the Irish McCalla television series, "Sheena Queen of the Jungle" (1955-56), were hobbled together to make a shoddy feature film called "Queen of the Jungle", possibly for the European market, but nothing is known about where or when it was released. See my web page about his film:
http://terrororstralis.com/sheena/irish/films/queen.htm

The 1984 "Sheena" starred Tanya Roberts as Sheena; Ted Wass as Vic Casey, a reporter; Donovan Scott as Fletch, his photographer/partner; Elizabeth of Toro as the Zambuli Shaman; France Zobda as Countess Zabda; and Trevor Thomas as Prince Otwani. It was filmed on location in Kenya and was directed by John Guillerman, who also directed "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure" (1959), "Tarzan Goes to India (1962), "The Towering Inferno (1974), and "King Kong" (1976).

"Sheena" was univerally panned by critics but has developed a cult following, principally because of the the film's tanned, muscular and scantily-clad leading lady.

  • This film is only entertainment, why there are always stupid people who want to relate everything with politics or religion?

  • What you need to understand is that there are people out there that "analyse" things and that it is the "stupid people" who don't. Obviously, some of the comments on this page by black people indicate that they find it offensive to show a blonde white woman as the ruler of black African tribes. I understand their concerns, but in the world of fantasy cinema sometimes the erotic image wins out over the polite and "politically correct" one.

  • fucking cheesy!!

i have live in west africa, and the natives do NOT ACCEPT BLOND AND BLUE EYED HOLLYWOOD to change their culture, this is truly the MAKING FOR AMERICAN HOLLYWOOD...NICE BUT TOTAL BULLSHIT:)

  • Even those dumb arse racists in America understand that black Africans are capable of running their own countries and have a rich and vibrant cultural heritage (OK, maybe they don't). However, this early 80s piece of camp cinema had only one intention - to show as much as possible of the cute, suntanned, muscular body of the lead actress. They weren't trying to "change their culture" or to get involved in the geopolitics of the continent. Tarzan, the white jungle lord, is popular the world over.

  • Sounds like racial supremacy to me. What happened to the concept of the Brotherhood of Man and racial equality? Glad to see that racism is alive and well in some dark corners of the globe.

  • @kittytr99 I agree! This is the very reason why I will not kneel to a White Jesus. I fought the War in Iraq and people of Middle Eastern Countries are of Color, not white, blonde, and blue eyed. White people could not take the heat and were eaten alive by sand flees. Europeans have long felt that they are superior over all other races.

  • ..I searched Sheena to see what would come up for my name, and I find Sheena of the Jungle....GREAT..That can't be where my mother got my name from, being an African-american Woman, and not a Blonde haired White woman...I guess she was real popular back then.

  • There is this girl I like named Sheena can't believe there is a movie about her :D

  • Tanya Roberts is a red head but tints it blonde

  • It isn't only Hollywood that created this scenario. "Liane the Jungle Girl" was filmed in Germany in 1957 and "Eve" was made in Spain in 1968. Neither of these countries share the US's reputation for racism. For example, many black jazz musicians went to live in Europe in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s to escape racism in the US. Therefore, you will need to find another reason why these films were made. I suspect it is because of the universal erotic appeal of wild white women in savage domains.
