Spasmodic Torticollis / Cervical Dystonia Public Service Announcement featuring Dixie Carter

This is a public service announcement that was made in 2003 featuring Ms. Dixie Carter. Among her many roles on stage and on television, she is well known for her role as the interior decorator Julia Sugarbaker in the 1980s/1990s television program Designing Women. The show enjoyed a seven-year run and made Carter a household name. In 2006 and 2007, Dixie Carter found renewed fame with a new generation of fans as the very disturbed and disturbing Gloria Hodge on Desperate Housewives, earning an Emmy nomination for her work on the series.

This public service announcement is currently being played in New York and New Jersey. We are currently working on having it aired nationwide to promote the awareness of ST and let people out there with ST know there is a place you can find additional information and support.

Words cannot express how much it meant to us that she would help a small organization spread awareness and find people who are suffering from spasmodic torticollis and are continuously misdiagnosed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Hal Holbrock and the rest of their family during this most difficult time.

Since then, we have received over 1850 calls to the NSTA office from people who have symptoms similar to ST and have not been officially diagnosed or have been diagnosed and are not aware there is an organization like NSTA that provides information and support.

Since January 2009, our PSA have been on rotation on CBS in New York and New Jersey. On December 2009, the PSA began its run on Comcast Stations all over the United States. This includes channels such as TNT, AMC MOVIES, E, CNBC, USA, TLC, CNN, A&E, ESPN, SPIKE, DISCOVERY, FX, FOX, THE HISTORY CHANNEL, just to name a few.

Our organization sends it sincere condolences to the late Dixie Carters husband, Hal Holbrock and the rest of the family. Ms. Carter was so kind to appear in a public service announcement (PSA) that would spread the awareness of spasmodic torticollis / cervical dystonia in 2002. She said Yes! when so many celebrities turned us down. She was so kind to allow us to film the PSA in her Beverly Hills home so we would not have to secure a location and incur expenses.

You were born with congenital torticollis which is caused when the neck muscle that runs up and toward the back of the baby's neck (sternocleidomastoid muscle) is shortened. This adult onset of spasmodic torticollis is a neurological movement disorder where the brain is sending messages to the muscles specifically in the neck to contract. This is what causes the head to pull to a direction. This can affect one or several muscles in the neck.

I don't think anyone is laughing at the condition. What got us was the sudden appearance of the unfortunately comically timed deer-in-headlights head shot. After that it was all over, we laughed randomly for hours after. They really should remake this commercial. Though, in it's present state, it does stick in one's memory....

I am so glad that these stars come out about stuff like this and other things like the abuse of animals. What bothers me is none of these stars will come out for the protection of children many of which are traumatized by DHS/CPS every year because of being ripped from their families who have done nothing wrong. Title IV funding is destroying families and is the cause of many children's deaths and yet none of these stars care to do a public service announcement for them what a shame.
