One can certainly tell she had operatic training in Europe.. European sopranos have a heavy sound that American sopranos THANKFULLY do NOT have. I guess it's whatever you're used to.. this is good, but, not as good as either Beverly Sills or Roberta Peters renditions.
My dear Oswara123, Few Americans, yourself included, know the true history of the Nazi era from the German perspective. The Nazis were murdering 5,000 Germans a month, including Erwin Rommel in October 1944. If the Nazis were willing to murder Rommel, what chance, pray tell, would Schwarzkopf have had ?
My friend, engaging brain before opening mouth has always been good advice.
I looked up her story. Apparently she did not join willingly. She joined only under duress. She did not share their beliefs. She merely wanted to practice her art, which was her right.
Her family had a history of resisting the Nazis. Her father lost his job because he refused to allow a Nazi meeting at the school he oversaw. Having witnessed what her father went through, she probably felt she had little choice.
Divine rendition of this beautiful piece. I, for one am glad this lady took the step necessary to preserve her life as did many German people of that era.. In this way she lived to bring her glorious gift to the world. For Oswara, Instead of blaming her for something she couldn't help, spend your energies making certain something like it doesn't happen in your country.
One would think Schwarzkopf would be perfect for this role, but to be emotionally overwhelmed by the schmaltziness of it all, listen to Nilsson's rendition on youtube. Nilsson milks it for all its worth. Schwarzkopf sounds as if she's got to catch the next train out of town.
One of the most beautiful sung songs of all times. But Mrs. Swarzkopf WAS a member of the Nazi party. So much beauty and so much murderous hate. Just - why?
It's a bit fast but I love ES.

I'd be inclined to cut her some slack.
