atmospheric pressure has nothing to do with this system. its all gravity as this can be done in a vaccum.

have you experimented with using daisy-chaining all the buckets together using a small .. say 1/4" tube inserted to the overflow drain and on the final bucket have nothing so the res will equalize all the buckets using atmospheric pressure and this way the res can be used as a rain catcher and no need for siphon of air entering and breaking the siphon. I have build may systems this way and works great. PS keep up the good work

brilliant !!
I have been looking at a simple float valve system but they are too expensive to use on each planter. Could you just use one in your master tank? I hope it would work because that could be my answer to my really broke gardener situation.
Thanks you guys for your smarts.

Yes, you should use just one float value for the entire system, not one float value per bucket.
Please see "Automatic Watering Part II".

re: The trash can seems to have a much higher level of water than the bucket would seem to have?
Yes, we filled the trash can extra high. By doing that we were able to see that the siphon was working. For the next few hours water continued to pour out of the overflow holes on the bucket as the two bodies of water reached equal height.
re: I'm assuming this would work for any container in the link as long as the water levels needed for each container are the same.
Yes!
