This practice was brought to the attention of the rest of the world by the BBC, which showed footage of the land divers, as they were then called. Inspired, the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club decided to give it a go. On April Fool's Day (April 1st), 1979, a group of four men tied nylon braided, rubber shock cords to their ankles and jumped from the 245-foot Clifton Suspension Bridge in England. The men were arrested, but it didn't matter. The bungee jumping history phenomenon had begun.
hey Krodgerson NO the guy is right the footage he saw showed them jumping from The Golden Gate Bridge! and here is the URL to the Video online to PROVE IT!
Ok the link won't post! but if you want to see it go to CURRENT DOT kom and go to the search bar and type Stunts and chaos it is a show that is on the current network. It is Episode 3 part 4 you will see the episodes listed it is on the top of the 2nd page.
I was a serving police officer at the time, the guys drew up in a van clipped on and threw themselves over, the only injury being the last guy who hesitated and had a nasty rope burn. It caused traffic chaos and my Inspector ordered that they be arrested (motorists were pretty heated) We took them to Southmead Police Station in Bristol where my Inspector shared a bottle of champagne with them in the cells - a good hearted and fun event dealt with in a style sadly no longer acceptable!
I've just watched film of the Dangerous Sports Club team doing a bungie jump from the Golden Gate Bridge in 1979. It was shown on American TV tonight! The guy talking about it was the cameraman at the time. He said the leader of the group was called Dave and that the group was from Britain, so it MUST be the same group! I moved to USA 5 years' ago and they think all Brits are mad - suppose this proves it!
