John Lanchbery
Philharmonia Orchestra

This series of four videos includes what I believe to be the best moments in the music from the Nutcracker ballet. Tchaikovsky handpicked his own selections of eight pieces from the score to be played at concerts, calling it the Nutcracker Suite. My choices, on the other hand, leave out the Arabian Dance from the Nutcracker Suite and instead add the popular Decoration of the Christmas Tree and the lovely Waltz of the Snowflakes.

***Sugar Plum Fairy Dance begins at 7:26***

  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, a small town in present-day Udmurtia, formerly province of Vyatka in the Russian Empire, to a family with a long line of military service. His father, Ilya Petrovich Tchaikovsky, was an engineer of Ukrainian descent who served as a lieutenant colonel in the Department of Mines[4] and manager of the famed Kamsko-Votkinsk Ironworks.[5] His grandfather, Petro Fedorovych Chaika, emigrated from Nikolaevka (near Poltava).
