Tried downloading windows vista recovery cd (from torrentz.com, thepiratebay), burning it to cd as an image and using repair startup repair? To transfer hdd data you gotta plug your hard disk to a working computer. Don't need external hard drive case, i think most pc are able to hold 2 hdd at the same time. Also you can access files with (ubuntu) live cd and transfer files to external usb hdd.

can you enter in windows by using safe mode? IF yes, when you are on desktop, press windows flag+r (run) -> type: CMD (hit enter) in command prompt (CMD) type: chkdsk /f ..if its not allowing it, try: chkdsk c: /f ...it will check the computer about problems and automatically fix the problems found.
