Our group toured Orléans for the day, which is about an hour drive from Paris. I played the Jongen Choral in this clip. It was a dry run :-) Excuse the socks...I was wearing sandals that day which wouldn't even begin to work playing the organ.

This instrument is a (recently) fully restored 1880 Cavaillé-Coll at Holy Cross Cathedral, Orleans. BEAUTIFUL! 72 ranks/4 manuals. This Cathedral is HUGE - as big as Notre Name in Paris. Our group got to tour inside the organ as well.

  • I see that quite a bit of teamwork is required to work this organ - the assistant was doing gymnastics around the organist, even to the point of operating the swell shoe!! Nice! .. :-D

  • Yes, with only having one shot to play my piece on a large instrument like this one it was nice to have the help. The person helping me was the famous CHRISTOPHE MANTOUX, Titular Organist, Saint-Séverin, Paris.

PS. Again, sorry about the socks. :-) I was wearing sandals that day and would have played 2 notes together if I would have worn them.

  • What's that smell?

  • Man what a performance! Thank you for sharing this. By the way you play well in your socks!

  • @octavegeigen4 Thanks for that orderd it straight away and arived today. have just had a practise in the local cathedral sounds great.

  • @simonsteam the piece is Chorale in E Major by Joseph Jongen

  • Wonderful WHat was this piece called?? This was the first Caville Coll organ i ever heard and was introduced to many years ago. It brought tears to my eyes and shivers down my spine and is still a favourite.

  • You are such a great player!!!!!! keep on going!

  • I have now watched all the uploads of your European trip and have had a great deal of pleasure, not just from the great music, great organs and historical locations but chiefly from your own obvious pleasure at being there and absorbing all that unique cultural heritage !

    Thank you.

  • Hi,man,do not worry! Player the organ in socks to consider better!!! You are very good organist!!!!

  • Don't worry about the socks,I think that organists actually play better without shoes-its like playing the keyboards with gloves,it can be done but it's not the most effective method.I've only recently started using shoes, and I've just gotten some OrganMaster shoes which actually are pretty good-I play pretty well in them. But I think that in all probability, the best organ shoes are ballerina shoes-they don't have heels, but then again, depending on one's organ technique, one might not need heels.
