In 1993, the experimental X2000 made a nationwide tour pushed by gas turbine Turboliners. This is footage of it passing between Corining & Hornell, New York on Conrail's Southern Teir line.

  • it's a shame there isn't southern tier passenger service. looks like pretty country to travel through. I suppose the population in the corridor is not dense enough to support it.

  • @Taconic66 Correct, Taconic66. There is next to nothing in terms of revenue along that line, which is why the eastern half was sold and the western half only sees a handful of trains. I have traversed the entire line though, and you are right, it is a beautiful and scenic part of the country.

  • @cbehr91 Though that's a Catch 22

  • @CSXer this is a Swedish X2000 train. U.S. has just bought one X2000 train. here in Sweden we call them X2 or X2000... this train was sweden`s first high speed train.

  • In those days the Conrail Southern Tier Line was the definition of bad track. They must have appreciated the data gathered on this trip. The use of Turboliners is an interesting detail.

  • Back in 1995, the X2000 (or three carriages of it including the driving trailer between two XPT power cars) was trialled on a service between Sydney and Canberra. The consist also toured the national standard-gauge network of Australia, visiting at least Brisbane and Melbourne. The livery was similar, with "COUNTRYLINK" replacing the Amtrak titles.

  • What locos are those??? They're a new one on me!!

  • In a book called railroads of the hudson river valley, they have those same exact turbos in the same exact paint scheme.

  • thats because they combined the nose of the X2000 and ICE to make Acela
