Are you in the military and transitioning to the civilian world, and not entirely sure what your options are? That's true of a lot folks when they come out of the military. Especially people who think, okay, I'm an aviator but I don't want to fly in the commercial side. I'm an infantryman or a marine guard and I don't really want to go back and do that as a civilian for the same thing. So what do I do next?
Well, one of the things that you do next is you think about what sort of things interest you? What skills and experiences can you take from your experience in the military? Perhaps you've done training of other people on the job, maybe you've been the one that helps all the new people when they come in to your unit. Perhaps you are really good at data gathering or analysis. You need to think about those skills that you are good at, you succeed in, and you really like to use. Then take those -- not job titles just skills -- and plug them in to one of the big job boards like Indeed.com or Monster.com and see what jobs come up.
Doing that gives you an idea of the range of jobs that might use those skills and allows you to look at job descriptions that will tell you about the work enough that you might know, hmm this interests me. Or, not me at all. There are certainly wonderful services, not only from your military transition office but online, from government, the One Stops that every state and local agency runs, the federal governments, career net services that will also help you in the same way. Don't forget, go to your local library and talk to a reference librarian about career resources and career transition. Take a look at all of these things and you'll be surprised how many more opportunities you have than you probably would have thought about otherwise.
All of these things then become the homework that allows you to make a successful transition to explain your military experience in terms that a civilian employer will understand and to give them a reason to want to hire you. That's the goal of your resume. It's the goal of every cover letter you write. And it's important that you know what you want to do so that you can do those effectively. Good hunting.
