September 2010 marked the 40th anniversary of the initial release of Dickey Betts composition titled, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". To honor this occasion, our band called "Beginnings" entered into a youtube "onlline" competition titled, "The Elizabeth Reed Showdown".
Although it was certainly a competition, in the end it wasn't about keeping score but time well spent making new friends and being part of a community of bands who participated, gave honor and have a high degree of respect for Dickey Betts, his composition, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and the original Allman Brothers Band.
Please give our band a listen. Our goal was to capture the spirit, energy and vibe of the 1971 historic recording that is featured on the Allman Brothers Band 1971"live" album titled, "The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East".
Our band performed the song mostly on a note-for-note basis in order to stay true to the original 1971 Fillmore East recording. While no band can ever capture or reproduce that historic 1971 recording, we certainly did our best in what little rehearsal time we were able to accomplish. The task was challenging and as a result we gained much respect and appreciation for The Allman Brothers Band who pulled it off so professionally on that March night back in 1971.
Turn up your speakers for a quality recording. This "live" video was recorded on October 20, 2010 at the "Jam Room" recording studio in Howell, NJ.
Thank you DickeyBetts.com for allowing us to enter this competition. We dedicate our performance to the original members of "The Allman Brothers Band" and to Dickey Betts and "Great Southern".
