This it beautiful and far preferable to the effortful versions of the Russian colleagues of present.
This is lyrical belcanto singing of highest order.

@burgul Because he was the greatest lyric tenor who ever lived.

Many thanks, dear Janja. A real pleasure to hear this beautiful aria sung with
talent and convincing emotion!

@burgul And have you listened to the Lemeshev version? Is it him you mentioned as co.?
Then you must really be sorry...
-
@burgul Enchanting, magical! Don't worry, maybe some Russians will be pissed off, but not all:-). I'm Russian but I agree with you that it's the best version and am not pissed off because of it:-). Thanks Janja for posting.

@2:07 looks like popular depictions of the Virgin Mary...I know it's just one of the characters, but I wonder if Rimsky-Korsakov intended this in some way...

Beautiful singing and video.

Gedda never disappoints! I use his renditions (especially Russian) as singing lessos!

How beautiful!
I'm sorry but this is undoubtedly the best existing version, with all due respect to kozlovsky and co. this is just unbelievable.

@Herur22 His mother was Russian, and so Russian is not foreign to him.

@chaiter1
His biologic mother was Swedish and father half-Russian. But you're right, Russian was not foreign to him because he lived with his adoptive mother (his half-Swedish aunt) and his adoptive father, who was Russian. So they spoke Russian at home.
