Maya 2011 Soft Body with Springs Basic Tutorial by Stuart Christensen

did you manually create each particle cloud or does it happen automatically when it hits the ground

@0fVolfAndMan There are 3 separate particle clouds (3 emitters) with a gravity field attached to each and the particles are made to collide with the surface plane. The particles are keyframed to begin emitting when the object touches the approximate spot of collision.
