1 TCL5940 chip controls 16 LEDs per layer. Each layer will be multiplexed quickly to make all layers appear to be on.

I demonstrate this by hand by switching the +5V pin input to each layer. Pretty fun ;D

  • hey dude great video!! I am Milton from Argentina

I am actually interested on doing a RGB led strip and control it with the TLC5940 for PWM.

My question is, how does the TLC works?

Do I need to program a microcontroller??

P.S: Please excuse mi english :)

  • The TLC5940 uses a standard serial input method. You clock in each bit through the serial data in, and then latch it after you've sent a full data packet. The easiest way to understand how to talk to it is by reading the datasheet & the programmer's flowchart.

I have linked to these documents now in the video's "more info"
