Er, I mean John's great with Shakti, but all I can hear here is garbage. It's not because it's Jazz that it's by any mean good. Nor polished. Those here are just random notes... He didn't built anything.

Great video but so are the replies to comments to be read. I'm no programmer or anything but if the YouTube engineers could put a button beside replies where it could take you to the original comment that would be good. I mean sometimes you've got twenty pages or more to sift through tryin to find the freakin thing.

Its not sloppy and his lines make alot of sense imo.
Trust me try playing through that tone/rig..not very forgiving.Props to a amazing musician/guitarist

@tighttritenight no bends? so the scalloped fretboard acoustic he used with Shakti was just somewhere to keep his joss sticks, right?

What a bunch of young fools. It started with A silent way went right thru bitches brew, thru spaces into mahavishnu and still lives on the edge today.Over 50 years of important guitar. What a bunch of fools. You can not start looking at John at Mahavishnu unless you are stupid. Its sad.No one had the balls to pick up where Django left off except John.'I got nothin aganst modern jazz unless yopu try to play it to damn fast'Who do you think the moptops were talking about?

The most exciting John Mclaughlin for me is his live concerts with the original 5 piece Mahavishnu Orchestra. I have something like 12 hours of live MO from 1972 and 1973. The playing of that band is out of this world. Mclaughlin and Billy Cobham working out together is one of those few and hard to find magical moments in music. Hendrix is the first cosmic experience and then the original MO. Actually McLaughlin's guitar tone with the MO is also the best tone he ever achieved.
that's the VINTAGE sound ! No one sounds like this anymore, with this old and ugly sound but magnified by the virtuosity, today too many guitarists are hiding behind effects, mc laughlin plays all the fuckin notes, no slide, it's just like a sax
