First (of five) part of the 1986 documentary from the BBC Horizon series. In this video Richard Dawkins explains how natural selection can favour co-operation in nature, so long as it is of benefit to the selfish gene.

His search for stable co-operate strategies, which remain unaffected by cheating and exploitation involves an extraordinary game known as the Prisoners' Dilemma, normally used by psychologists to study human behaviour.

In their attempts to earn real money, players must wrestle with a dilemma - whether to follow their natural instincts of co-operation or the dictates of reason and behave selfishly.

  • What is this music in every video!? I want it!

  • @zxcv1234vcxz Oh yes.

  • @Clarkgasm - Did the video make you want to meet him in an elevator?

  • @doveinturkey Love can't be from god because god does not exist.

  • @doveinturkey Definition of ALTRUISM

1: unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others

2: behavior by an animal that is not beneficial to or may be harmful to itself but that benefits others of its species

Seems Webster's Dictionary dosent disagree. Why would people teach turn your cheek or love your neighboer? They arent teaching that. Those are just catchphases that embody a deeper sentiment. Even if they are teaching them ... do we do them?

  • @Clarkgasm Was?

  • I don't see how mutually beneficial behavior is "altruistic behavior". This doesn't address the possibility of "turning the other cheek" or "loving your enemy". Why would anyone believe much less teach these latter ideas in a world of mutually benefiting species or individuals?

  • who gives a shit about the soccer game! get on with it!
