Genesis started life as a progressive rock band, in the manner of Yes and King Crimson, before a series of membership changes brought about a transformation in their sound, into one of the most successful pop/rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett. Their roots go back to 1965 and a pair of rival groups, the Garden Wall and the Anon, formed by students at the Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey. They merged, with the result that 15-year-olds Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford joined with 14-year-old Anthony Phillips, calling themselves the New Anon and recording a six-song demo featuring songs primarily written by Rutherford and Phillips.

The man steps out in the moonlight
At the sound of a scream from below.
He thinks he is a warrior
So he picks up his sword and goes.

From the mouth of the monster
He rescues the maiden fair.
But we know she's a demon
Come to lure him to demon's lair.

Through restless foliage and tall trees he leads
To a house in a clearing, a place in her fear she calls home.

"Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I'll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like."

And though his body bids him
To enter in with her,
There was something in her manner
That his mind could not ignore.

Also it is whispered
In the kingdom far and wide,
To beware a little cottage
In the forest in a glade.

For who knows what magic takes place in his world?
So he just thanks her kindly preparing to go on his way.

"Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I'll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like.

Come to my garden,
Taste the fruits and the spices of love.
You can't resist me,
I'm the kind that your dreams tell you of."

"So glad you could make it
We had everything arranged.
So glad you saw fit to pay a call."

Some men never listen,
And others never learn,
But why this man did as he did
Only he will ever know.

He knew he was walking
Into a waiting trap,
Neatly set up for him
With a bait so richly wrapped.

So he went inside there to take on what he found
But he never escaped them, for who can escape what he desires?

"Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I'll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like."

  • This is the most amazing magic in form of a song...

  • @isitrealgood there might have been expectations, but no amount of expectations in the world can interfere with the spirit..and their musicianship is the result of pure passion and desire to be great. Today, the youth has a passion to be "seen" not heard, and not great...they use technology & image to replace the authenticity bands like genesis had..which mind you, came naturally with hard work.

  • @codern I think the expectations of musicians were higher back then as opposed to now. Even the best players played in pop records. Of course, this is also the same era as punk music....

  • One of their best.

  • Simply awesome. Live the live footage.

  • this album is a fucking treasure!! i preach genesis like a gospel, the more people i turn to them the better the world will be.

  • @Jhensy2012 That's why my keyboard is written BANKS on top of all avaliable synths... lol

  • Best song on ATTW3. The outro in particular is one of the best in Genesis's catalogue...I love how Tony just keeps jamming those chords all over the piano while Phil drums like a madman in the background. I almost wish they would have extended that outro for a minute or two longer...

  • musicians were just so much better years ago...i dont care what anyone's argument is because at the end of the day im reminded why im always right about my argument time and time again
