This is the result of a study on levitation based on magnetic induction. A coil driven by an AC power source hovers by Lenz's law repulsion over a conductive plate. No ferromagnetic materials are involved: the coil hovers freely over the aluminium plate.

Lower frequencies require thicker plates and are less efficient. Flat coils are generally more efficient. Larger coils are also more efficient than smaller ones, but need a lot more power.

  • The audio amp (PA) can be driven from a signal generator and then there are buttons to change frequency and amplitude (voltage).

Some computer instrument that plays continuous notes (like an organ) will also do. In this case the line output of the computer's audio will drive the PA.

  • Can the plate be replaced by something else. A field? Ionized conductive field? What if a current is pumped through mercury vapor twirled around rapidly? Would this same effect occur?

  • Replacing the plate by a field is kind of tricky. A field doesn't appear by itself. Must be created by something. There could be a force between the coil and this something (likelly another coil). In this sense, yes, it might work.

Technical details apart, any time-variable current will create a variable magnetic field, including a current flowing through twirling mercury vapour. There will be in any case repulsion via Lenz's law.

  • It seems rapidly spinning mercury vapor would help with heat build up better similar to the vortex drives of the ancient vimanas in the Vaimanika Shastra. Does the effect discovered by Boyd Bushman also use a plate? And finally, what kind of radiation do you think would be easiest to use to ionize air?

  • This is exactly the same as "discovered" By Boyd Bushman, except that the explanation is not based on UFOs...

To ionize air the simplest way is a spark. A car ignition, for intance.

About the ancient vimanas I cannnot comment. I'm only a physicist... :-)

  • If the inductor can support 7g then you probably could construct it with a lithium polymer battery and simple drive circuit and have it be free standing. That would be extremely cool! It's very cool already as it is. :-)

    Thanks,

    Scott

  • Interesting idea! May be I try it.

    Thanks

  • try mercury.

  • how does one change the frequency and voltage??

  • Is there any tutorial of how to this?

  • nice electromagnet. like poles repel each other. induce magnetic field vs magnetic field on the coil.

  • im looking for a method to attract aluminum powder for recycling would this work

  • Could you use UV to ionize air easily?

BTW it is believed that the modern TR-3B astra has a drive that works the similar as the mercury plasma vortex drive of the ancient vimanas/vailixi.
