  • Impressive shots! I wonder how many inches high, the rails for the tracks are in the UK? In the US, the rails are about six inches off the tie plates, on the railroad ties.

  • Thanks very much, As for rail height shrewsbury is a bit of an odd place as the town has a number of different types of rail in use, i think the standard is around 8 - 10 inches, im shore some one will correct me.

  • So the rails are higher? I'm not sure if the rail height has to do with the clearance gauge. But what I do know is that our clearance gauge is 15' 6", to fit double-stack containers we use in America. The British clearance gauge is about 13' 6".

  • yeah i think so, the rails sit higher because of the chairs used to secure the rails to the sleepers (ties) As for uk loading gauge, that has more to do with the low Victorian bridges and tunnels that make up most of Britons railways and are to expensive or difficult to replace or widen. Some point this summer i'll go down to some disused track and measure the rail height , i'll get back to you, properly make a video of it.
