No, as you level up you are awarded new starships for free, and in missions you collect "loot" which can be weapons, shields, power-ups, etc. I managed to get a large ship with great weapons and crew without spending a single cent. There are better starships and some content that you do need to pay for but they are not necessary to win in this game.

I know. And you're right. I think I was drunk when I wrote that. Truth is, I could never comprehend the lack of economy in the Star Trek universe. The Ferengi introduction of capitalism is, I think, part of what made DS9 a better series.

Let's face it; Gene was the worst thing to happen to his own franchise. Once he got his claws off it we started getting half decent storylines (see DS9) because they could move away from impossible-happy-utopia land and explore the darker corners of the characters and factions that inhabit it.

What a load. when this game first came out as a star trek fan I supported it by paying for a lifetime subscription to keep it going so others could enjoy it. now that this lot has taken over it I have had nothing but never ending disconnection issues and have done everything I possibly could to figure it out? if anyone else has had login problems let me know. a fantastic game and genre I love being let down.
