You should look up the melting point of stainless steel. Also keep in mind that as long as there is water in the bottle and the cap is off it's pretty much impossible for the bottle to melt. Unless you use a laser or something.
@killerkowalczyk Klean Kanteen have a very informative website. They say in the FAQ's you can stick the non-coloured and non-insulated bottles over a fire or on a stove without the cap no problem (as it is only 100% 18/8 stainless steel afterall). They actually LISTEN to customers needs and realise that backpackers/hikers etc want something they can collect, store, boil and drink water from all in one. Beautiful. I love them

I wouldn't put it directly over fire because the metal is thin, but you can pour boiling water into it.
