@CastleOfThoughts HI, the best version I have is from "Best of The ABC Years" CD, and knowing the single so well, I know it's the same master. The one you have here is so very close, but as a long-time musician, I can hear that they used a different take, obviously from the same session. There are slight differences in how the piano is played and in how the song is sung. I always love to hear it, when some other take is used for a "Hits" collection. That does happen occasionally. Great song!
I am very familiar with the hit version of this song by Frankie Laine. This version is an out-take. Very nice though. Around 1999, I checked out Frankie Laine's official website and sent him an e-mal, telling him how I thought THIS song with his AWESOME vocal... the great arrangement etc. was the greatest single ever released in the 60's. To my delight, Frankie Laine personally e-mailed me back and told me I'd made his day!! He then sent me an autographed picture which I treasure!

@CastleOfThoughts This came from one of his later CD's as the the LP and 45 that I have was not in the best of quility. I Thought it had come from the same master disk as Frankie was long gone from ABC when the CD's came out.
If you can tell the diference you have a better ear than I have.

FRankie Laine was one of the old time greats. Having lived during that era I can only say that his rendition of this song is memorable

@harryb6345 I pity the people who didn't live through that period in our history. They missed a lifestyle that I'm afraid will never come again. The Government didn't try to run your our lives. The closes thing to a Government offical we came close to was the mailman. Then there was a many music styles to choose from, now it all sounds the same. But best of all remember gas being 30 cents a gal. Those were the days.

@markalson1938 I also remember when they had a gas war in my town of Salisbury, nc. The gas got down to 14 cents a gal. Wow! I was a teen then= good old days, gone forever......

@ronofnc Oh yes, the good old gas wars, I remember them well. With a Gas Station on all four corners of an intersection and all fighting for your business. They were the oly good wars since WWII. But the lowest I remember was 19 cents a gal. Rolling down the highway on a dollar's worth of gas and Frankie Laine on the radio, that was the life.
