Jimmy Toner switched riders on Winter Memories for the $250,000 Garden City Stakes (gr. IT) in hopes of getting his supremely talented filly a cleaner trip and a better chance at scoring her first grade I win.

Somewhere at about the quarter pole of the 1 1/8-mile turf race Toner may have been regretting that decision, as new rider Javier Castellano found himself loaded with horse but stuck behind the entire field with no way out. The 3-year-old daughter of El Prado somehow overcame the brutal trip and with one huge burst allowed her trainer a huge sigh of relief.

  • I've followed Theysken's Theory's career very closely in Europe, and this Bernardini filly has really been a class act throughout her career. I had a feeling she was being overlooked in this race today. Winter Memories won on pure class today. IMO, the ride she got from Javier Castellano in this race was nearly as bad as the ride she got in the Lake Placid by Jose Lescano. Hope to see both of these fillies in November in the BC F&M Turf!!

  • Totally disagree with the commentators about the Lake Place not being the jockey's fault. The difference between these two races is Javier slowed her down to stay toward the back of the back....she was not buried in the middle of the pack like she was in the Lake Placid. And that, I think, is totally jockey error. I'm sure he felt she should be closer to the front and not trail, but as it turns out, WM can take care of business if you just steer her in the right direction!!! Great race!

  • Hats off to Castellano for that ride. Looked like he got pinched and shuffled back by the 7 into the far turn. Unusual to see a horse come from off the pace on such a slow pace. The horse just exploded.

  • Arch Support is such a bad name XD

  • I'm sad we won't see WM at the BC...I was so looking forward to that race.
