@nidingaslakt if you ever seen the miniseries, Donovan entered the special section of the mother ship where hundreds and thousands of people were encapsulated (alive but cryogenically frozen) and martin(one of the visitors) told him the fate of all those people. yes they ate birds ,mice etc.as well, basically, anything alive.

Funny how there are people who love the original 5-part V mini-series, but hate the TV show that followed. The problem with the TV show was that it started off as a great continuation of the story, but then started turning into more of a "Sci-Fi soap opera". It became less about the resistance vs. the visitors, and more about the drama between Lydia, Diana, & Charles, and other such nonsense. V started turning into a Days of Our Lives (with lizards). Only lasted 1 season.
