Documentary on the German and Austrian, mostly Jewish, immigration to Hollywood in the 1930's and 1940's. If you can get past the annoyingly sinister voice doing the voiceover narration, this is a very interesting documentary.

Sakall, Paul Henreid, Conrad Veidt, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Emil Jannings, Lupita & Paul Kohner, Spencer Tracy, Ilka Grüning, Ludwig Stössel, Wolfgang Zilzer, Curt Bois, Trude Berliner, Dalio, Madeleine LeBeau, Hans von Twardowski, Lotte Palfi, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis.

Composers:

Franz Waxman, Friedrich Hollaender, Hans Salter, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Werner R. Heymann, Arthur Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky, Miklós Rózsa.

Writers:

Salka Viertel, Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Siodmak.

Cinematographers: Rudolph Maté.

  • As you already know I enjoyed this documentary very much and was so moved by the individual stories of my favorite films, actors, directors and writers. So many of the movies and actors performances mentioned, will take on a whole new meaning the next time I watch them. I'll have to watch 'Casablanca' again soon for sure. Thanks so much for all your hard work and the tremendous effort it must of taken to subtitle the orginal! much appreciated by this viewer :)

  • Hi Steven, thanks for the comment, and I agree with you: this documentary also gave me a new perspective on classics I thought I knew all about. My only regret about this film is that it really lacked emphasis on the composers (Steiner, Waxman, Korngold et al) whose contributions were really so fundamental to Hollywood films then (and now!)

  • grazie mille!

really thank you sooooo much for putting all these documentaries up!

  • Thank you so incredibly much for putting this up - and subtitling it! That must have been a lot of work! It was intensely fascinating and informative, I know I never would've learned so much about that group otherwise. (They just don't show documentaries like that here. Not unless they made a summer blockbuster about it first!)

    Thank you again!

  • I absolutely agree with grassisbluer.

But many, many thanks for this!

    Michael
