BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. It is a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russian NPO Mashinostroeyenia who have together formed BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited.

The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia. The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0.It is about three-and-a-half times faster than the USA's subsonic Harpoon cruise missile. An Air launched variant is also planned which is expected to come out in 2012 and will make India the only country with supersonic missiles in all the defence forces. A hypersonic version of the missile is also presently under development (Lab Tested with 5.26 Mach Speed).

The missile is in service with the Indian Navy. Talwar class frigate and Shivalik class frigate are frigates of the Indian Navy that can fire the BrahMos. INS Tabar and INS Trishul are Talwar class vessels armed with supersonic BrahMos while INS Shivalik was the first vessel of the Shivalik class to incorporate the BrahMos. The submarine launched version of the missile is ready for testing. The missile will be either tested on a Kilo class submarine of the Indian Navy or will be tested in Russia.
Brahmos I Block-I
A model of land based launcher for the Indian Army. The missile was successfully tested with new capabilities for the Indian Army in the deserts of Rajasthan, test range near Pokharan (December 2004 & March 2007). It was inducted into the army on June 21, 2007.
Brahmos I Block-II
A test of a new BrahMos block II cruise Missile at Pokhran in Rajasthan was conducted with new software on 4 March 2009 and was successful.
On September 5, 2010, Defence scientists test fired BrahMos off the orissa coast and created a world record. It was for the first time that a cruise missile was tested at supersonic speeds in a steep-dive mode. The missile was test-fired from the integrated test rang launching complex-3 (LC-3) at Chandipur around 11.35 am. With this launch, The army's requirement for land attacks with block-II advanced seeker software with target discriminating capabilities has been fully met. BrahMos is the only supersonic cruise missile possessing advanced capability of selection of a particular land target amongst a group of targets, providing an edge to the user with precise hit.
BrahMos I Block-III
An upgraded version of 290- km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test fired by India on 2nd December 2010 from Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur off the Orissa coast.
"Block III version of BrahMos with advanced guidance and upgraded software, incorporating high manoeuvres at multiple points and steep dive from high altitude was flight tested successfully from Launch Complex III of ITR,"
It can effectively engage ground targets from an altitude as low as 10 meters for surgical strikes at terror training camps across the border without causing collateral damage. BrahMos is capable of being launched from multiple platforms like submarine, ship, aircraft and land based Mobile Autonomous Launchers (MAL).The Block III BrahMos , has the capability scaling Mountain Terrains & hence can play a vital role in precision strike in the northern territories. The advanced cruise missile can fly close to the rough geographies and kill the target..
AIR FORCE
The air launched version for the Indian Air Force is ready for testing. An expert committee from the DRDO and the Indian Air Force (IAF) has ruled out any structural modification to the advanced Su-30MKI if it is to be fitted with the supersonic BrahMos. January 10, 2009 it was reported that two Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets have been sent to Russia for a retrofit program that would enable them to launch the aerial version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

BrahMos II
BrahMos II is a hypersonic cruise missile that has been lab tested with a speed of Mach 5.26 that will make it the fastest cruise missile in the world beating Brahmos 1.BrahMos II is expected to be ready by 2013 and will arm the Project 15B destroyers of the Indian Navy.

  • India has some very cool missiles. In specially the Shaurya, which is very advanced. It is a true quasi-ballistic missile, which makes it virtually impossible to detect and intercept. But I wonder where do they get their technology from? I find it hard to believe that they can develop such technologies on their own.

  • @StiviGun1 India is only country in world to get success at 1st attempt to send satellite to moon .. American had 5 failure .. Russian had 3 ..Even till today China had 2 failure and without success ... Sending Satellite to moon is more critical technology than making advanced missile ... American Missile can drop 10 nuke by one missile .. Indian can drop 12 .. that to within 50 mtr

  • BRAHMOS is a BRAHM ASTRAA which cannot be stopped if launched!!!

It's the world's fastest supersonic missile!

    accuracy = 110%

  • @StiviGun1

Go to India and interact with some intellectual there, specially IIT students or high profile professionals (trust me you will find tons of them) then you will find out how India got all those technology. There are significant number of Indians in US projects of NASA or Microsoft and other IT related institutes. FYI, both Hotmail and pentium are made by Indians i.e Sabeer Bhatia and Vinod Dham. It is a country with very high potential, but progress is hindered by corruption only.

  • I read Supersonic Cruise...

Dam it can't people do cool stuff anymore? every time is some negative shit, controlled some asshole following orders, who is following orders and so on.

  • @youmazdatube Also, American and Russian nuclear missiles have been traditionally limited by mutual agreements. The R-36 could carry as many as 38 MIRVs, but due to an agreement with US this quantity was cut to10. The Trident II can cary up to 14 MIRVs. I hope you're not seriously arguing that India's missiles and rockets outclass Russia's and America's, especially considering that India's technologcal development is highly reliant on Russian expertise.

  • @youmazdatube The Indian space programme, nonetheless, was developed with a lot of USSR assistance. And it's no coincidence that India is the world's number 1 importer of foreign military technology.

  • @ikemefunaikemefuna

It can be stopped because the world has anti cruse missile defences.

  • And what are you proud of ? That country like USA managed to brain drain your country so well and most if not all of your intellectual elite is living and working abroad for benefits for others? Get a grip man. You have proven to be a fool for so many times during exchange with me on here that it may be the last opportunity for you to shut up.

  • @Mega80smetal I have graduated from a very good university hahaha. And I can reassure you I have good idea about statistics and IQ measurements. And no - average IQ is not measured the way you have described above.

  • @Mega80smetal Just simply looks it up on internet and you will find many names including Marie Sklodowska Curie and Nicolaus Copernicus :-) For easy comparison - Poland - 12 Nobel Prize Laureates( 38 million population ), India - 7 Laureates ( 1171 millions population )

  • @Mega80smetal And Indian scientists and Engineers are well known throughout the world for their contributions.Ever heard of the Indian Institutes of technology? Or the Indian Institutes of Management. They are considered as one of the best universities of technological education the world.Half of NASA Ph.D holders are Indians. So are half of the teaching faculties at all Ivy leagues in the US.I can't say the same about Poland. With all that IQ.

  • @danielgrzybowski75 And what school did you graduate from? Do you even know how they measure average IQ? Do you even know the technique of calculating averages? Obviously,India has a population that cannot even be compared to Poland.Average IQ is determined by summing total all the IQ's and dividing them by the number of people. It's obvious that any country with a population as large as India will have it's averages dominated by sheer numbers alone.

  • @danielgrzybowski75 Okay.Name 10 areas of science and technology in which a Polish has contributed.Along with their names. If you can come up with more than 10 names,I give you credit. And yeah, after you've finished,we Indian's will come up with our own.
