Soviet SF flick from 1959 (think Sputnik). Rocket launch scene. Film was "Nebo Zovyot" (the heavens call), which has never been released in the west. Like all Soviet films the movie is stunningly dull, but the visuals are wonderful and truly capture the period.

Roger Corman bought rights to Nebo Zovyot and used the special effects in two wonderful, campy flicks: Battle Beyond the Sun and Planet of Blood, both highly recommended for fans of the psychotronic. Francis Ford Copolla was the associate producer of one of them! Both of Corman's films are available on Amazon.com.

The original russian version of Nebo Zovyot is no where to be found. Would love to buy a copy if anyone has a lead on where to find it!!

  • Oh, those wacky socialists, with their radical, dangerous ideas like equal opportunities for women and minorities... Why, it's un-American!

Seriously, though, you're quite right. I'm enjoying these clips of a world-that-might-have-been, and in some ways we are headed backwards from. Knowing some of those old communist idealists first-hand, there were good things to what they did. It would be sad to lose the gains they made.

  • This movie had a lot of accidental insights into the Soviet way of doing things...the way both the launch and later in-flight maneuvers are handled entirely by ground control, for instance, instead of from the ship. Also note the (non-sexy, middle-aged) woman in charge--try finding that in a 50s American film!

    Da-ski, commrade!

Everyone in Russia knew just how well trampled ethnic minorities took to running Soviet-style bureaucracies on their own!

And indeed, Womyn Everywhere would already be running the World! All they had to do is adapt to those enticing, Cold War clothing styles (and get their unibrows activated)!

  • "Like all Soviet films the movie is stunningly dull"..... seems like you don't know much about Soviet cinema. I don't think that Andrei Tarkovsky, Sergei Eisenstein, Alexander Dovzhenko or Vsevolod Pudovkin made "dull movies".

  • @Shufei Err, at least in the Soviet military, minorities were treated like garbage and had a glass ceiling. Almost all officers were Russian, almost all NCOs were Slavic, and Central Asians were abused horribly.

    Not much equality there.

  • @khlopovstan The original with English titles is also on veoh com.

  • You can watch the original with English subtitles on stagevu com; the uncaptioned one is here on youtube.

  • You can find "Nebo Zovyot" ( небо зовет ) and " Мечте навстречу " on rutracker

  • I think this film was ahead of its time. The only other film I can think of that compares with this was the 1957 film Forbidden Planet which addressed the issue of our own technology becoming our downfall.

  • @trekfancvg

Yo, you're offending me, not all Soviet movies were dull!

  • @heatflash888 you're acting as if the russians were the only ones that ever did such a thing, majority people have killed, raped, and enslaved, minority people all throughout history. The British did it in india, australia, and canda. the germans did it to the jews. The romans did to everyone that was and wasn't roman and the americans did it to african people in africa and in america, and are still doing it in third world countries around the world. they just call it a "cooperation/factory".

  • @ChromodynamicGirl is living in poverty because the US cooperations enslave them into factory workers only so fat fucks like you can enjoy their happy meal. Keep telling your self that you have a great government the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA will fall someday!!!
