Although NATO flatly denies using depleted uranium in bombings in Libya, others like Gulf War veteran and depleted uranium expert Melissa Sterry is adamant (after viewing video footage of bombings) that DU is indeed being used.
So what is depleted uranium and why is it so dangerous?
DU is the waste product from the process of enriching uranium ore. It is used in nuclear weapons and reactors. Because it is a very heavy substance, 1.7 times denser than lead, it is highly valued by the military for its ability to punch through armoured vehicles and buildings. When a weapon made with a DU tip strikes a solid object like the side of a tank, it goes straight through it, and then erupts in a burning cloud of vapour. The vapour settles as dust, which is not only poisonous, but also radioactive.
An impacting DU missile burns at 10,000 degrees C. When it strikes a target, 30% fragments into shrapnel, while the remaining 70% vaporises into highly-toxic oxides, including uranium oxide. This black dust remains suspended in the air and, according to wind and weather, can travel over great distances.
Particles less than 5 microns in diameter are easily inhaled and may remain in the lungs or other organs for years. Internalized DU can cause kidney damage, cancers of the lung and bone, skin disorders, neurocognitive disorders, chromosome damage, immune deficiency syndromes and rare kidney and bowel diseases. Pregnant women exposed to DU may give birth to infants with genetic defects. Once the dust has vaporised, don't expect the problem to go away soon. As an alpha particle emitter, DU has a half-life of 4.5 billion years.

DU in the Invasion & Occupation of Iraq.
Depleted uranium (DU) was used widely especially by America & Britain in 2003 in the invasion & occupation of Iraq. Cities in Iraq where DU weapons were heavily used, such as Baghdad, Basra, Samara, Mosul and especially Fallujah, which was virtually levelled in a November 2004 assault, have since been showing high rates of birth abnormalities along with unusually high rates of leukaemia.
A University of Michigan report published in December 2010 found that of 547 births in Fallujah General Hospital in May of 2010, (6 years after the all-out US assault on that city), 15% of babies had birth defects, a rate more than five times higher than the global average of 2-3%.
In September 2009, Fallujah General Hospital had 170 babies born, 24 % of whom died within their first week of life. This compares to August 2002, six months before the U.S. invasion, when 530 live births were reported with only six dying in the first week.

Protecting Libyans with Depleted Uranium?
The aim of the UN resolution (on a no-fly zone over Libya) was formulated very precisely to protect civilians. So the very use of these abhorrent weapons in itself threatens all Libyans. It is not a coincidence that former US Justice Secretary Ramsey Clark slammed the use of depleted uranium weapons as "an unacceptable threat to life and a violation of international law" Now are the Libyan opposition forces and their supporters in the UK still blind and deaf to believe the humanitarian justification pretext used by the NATO led military intervention? Or are they too nationalistic to fully comprehend that the use of these deadly weapons is like a postponed death sentence on the future generations of Libyan.
