A rare recording of the OBC of Pacific Overtures (1976). The Musical (music/lyrics: Stephen Sondheim book: John Weidman) was nominated for 10 Tony awards (won two) and 7 Drama Desk awards (won two). Featuring Mako, James Dybas,  Timm Fujii,  Alvin Ing,  Patrick Kinser-Lau,  Isao Sato,  Sab Shimono,  Mark Syers,  Ricardo Tobia,  Gedde Watanabe,  Fusaka Yoshida.

The story takes place in 1853 and concerns the opening up of Japan to the West: "clash of cultures" sort of thing. In the Finale ("Next") it fast-forwards to the present (1976, when the show opened), so yes, TexasPhoneMan, WWII ain't part of it. But "Next" shows the results of the post-war, American consumerist remaking of Japan and leaves us with the question, "was it worth it?" I saw this before I left for college and it is still one of the most memorable theater experiences of my life.

They DID included it in the 2004 revival, though...

One of the flaws of the story-line: They forgot that little "thing" called World War 2...
