Bob Weigel of Sound Doctorin' demonstrates the Hammond 102100 synthesizer, a rare analog monophonic unit capable of some warm sounds and somewhat flexible through use of an array of preset switches. Sliders for wind (noise), tuning and volume. But 7 buttons each for waveforms (32' square, 32' saw, 16' of the same, 8' of the same, and 4' of a pulsey saw), filter mode, Width (one shots and repeating) and rates for vcf, envelopes for vca, pitch bend envelopes/portamentos, and modulations. Presets are French horn, Tuba, Violin, Sax, Clarinet, and 'space echo'. Cancelling presets leaves one with whatever the button matrix has selected then. Only one button in each row of 7 can be pressed at once. But as you see some useful combinations do come up and it's certainly a useful synth for the studio.

  • My first synth too - 18th Birthday 1975.

$650 direct from the local Organ Emporium.

I played mine until it fell apart. Wish I knew Bob then.

  • @pogsquatch oh man that's too bad! Yeah I hear a lot of them were scrapped out.

  • Thanks for posting this. This is the 1st Synthesizer I ever had. Actually, the 1st musical instrument I had. It was 1977 when I bought it. I traded it in a few years later since it was in need of work and I wanted something else. I've had at least 40 or 50 different keyboards since then and recently picked up one of these again for nostalgia . It needs work...lol ... but it's a piece of history and I got it pretty cheap.

  • Glad you found one! I was going to post all the literature and I never got around to it... that reminds me..someone pointed me to a program for making .pdf out of arbitrary .jpg's I need to do that. I was going to put it on the 102100 part of my website. I scanned the songs and everything!

  • nice demo.. i have one of these... you can jam all the buttons down and make it sound nasty

  • @Microsloth They also made the Novachord in 1938.Worlds first Polyphonic Synthesizer!

  • Cool, I never knew Hammond made a synth.

  • Mkay thanks a bunch!!!!

  • Hehe. yeah the concept of a hammond that uses divide down but isn't polyphonic..kinda bizarre! The thing about full poly divide down is...all the frequencies are generated and conditioned and just reside on the keybuss. So when you hit a key bammo that signal is added to whichever buss and eventually is mixed to the mix of tones that are going on. But a monosynth can be made to where the vco tracks to the note that's being hit...which creates that nifty natural transition, allows glides etc.

  • OH really i thought it was a poly nevermind
