On the 22nd of January 2011 the UK Cold Water Swimming Championships took place at Tooting Bec Lido in Wandsworth. Tooting Bec Lido is the largest fresh water pool in England, offering a 90m pool, as well as being perhaps one of the coldest pools in England with the water temperature on the day of competition being a chilly 3.5 'C.
Despite the cold however, Enfield Water Polo entered an extremely strong team including former National swimmer and water polo player Chris Dean, National Swimming and Open Water Age Group Champion Maddie Tichbourne and GB U19 Water Polo Player Tom Dean. This multi-disciplined aquatic side finished in a winning time of 1.11.50, beating their nearest opponents by two seconds and being crowned fastest team on the day.
Overall it was a very satisfying and enjoyable day out for all and while Enfield Water Polo were singularly victorious, a large part of the satisfaction of the championship is simply overcoming the mental and physical challenge of immersion!
