Dinah Washington (August 29, 1924 December 14, 1963), the Queen of the Blues, was born Ruth Lee Jones in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. As a teenager, she joined Lionel Hampton's band as its premiere vocalist and soon rose to become one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century. She has since been inducted in the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and been issued a commemorative postage stamp.
In 1961, as part of her tribute to her idol, Bessie Smith, Ms. Washington performed "Trouble In The Lowlands" at an uncredited club. It's been said that though there are other recordings of her where her voice may be considered to be in finer form, she was at her best when the mood struck her in intimate settings as this one and the accompanying musicians did their best to try to keep up with her vocal calisthenics.
While performing in London, in 1959, she declared in reference to her title as "Queen of the Blues," "I'm happy to be here, but just remember, there's one heaven, one earth and one queen: Elizabeth is an imposter!"
