The world faces an impending bottleneck: too many of us consuming limited resources on a finite planet, flooding the air, water and soil with toxins, fouling our nest. If you already know this and are doing nothing, its time to wake up.

On December 7, 2009, representatives of governments, NGOs, and businesses, as well as researchers into climate change and members of the press from all over the world will gather in Copenhagen, Denmark, to finalize a follow-up treaty to the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012. This is our last best shot at halting and reversing global greenhouse gas emissions before the 2015 date climate scientists posit as a turning point, beyond which escalating emissions could trigger catastrophic climate disruption.

Never having signed the Kyoto Protocol it helped negotiate, the United States has dragged its feet for years while actually increasing its rate of emissions. Only the global recession has managed to slow that rate, but we need to do more. Already, the framework agreed to in Bali in 2007 is being watered down in negotiations, and the resulting agreement may fall into the too little, too late category.

There are many organizations you can join to magnify your individual effort to reduce our collective impact on the planet's climate. Here's one good place to start: http://tcktcktck.org/

And here's another way to get involved: participate in the International Day of Climate Action, October 24, 2009. Sign up for an action in your neighborhood, or organize one yourself: http://www.350.org/

Wake up. Speak up. Call or write your congresspersons and members of the Obama administration before and during the Copenhagen conference. Let them know that you support a much stronger curb on emissions than what they are currently proposing. Better late than never.

  • You are all blind to the real events happening.

It's all a Canadian/Russian plot. Two of the worlds to largest oil countries all increasing CO2 levels with the end goal of raising capital in this transition period then melting away their frozen waste lands and creating a new world right on top of the old one.

And Bush/Cheney are also co-conspirators, bunch of secret canadians.

  • How should I know? I'm just a cartoonist. I know what the agenda of "Human Events" is; but I really don't understand why non-scientists feel the need to call the science into question for political purposes or short-sighted economic gain, when the risks of doing so are so potentially catastrophic - and for what? So we can drive some more? That's the only agenda I see. Sure, we can burn it all - dig it up, pump it up, use it 'til we've given this planet the climate of Venus. Why? I don't know.

  • who ever comes across this video should read the comments to,,,great debat

  • Confirmation bias at work, courtesy of America's favorite climate change denier, Senator Inhofe. Please note that they are talking about "oil equivalents", which covers a lot of energy intensive, very expensive processing to get a barrel of oil (they don't tell you how much it would cost to recover this "oil" and they certainly don't want to mention the environmental damage involved.) Also note: it's not about the size of the tank; it's about the size of the spigot (the rate of flow).

  • Minus the hyperbole, I'm pretty much in agreement with him. Since it requires continuous growth fueled by a limited supply of resources on a finite planet to even sustain itself, industrialized civilization is pretty much toast anyway. The sooner we let it go, the sooner we can get down to the business of saving ourselves from its disastrous consequences.

  • NWD: It's provable fact by more scientists than you can muster that you're wrong on almost all of your postings and "assumptions" ... replanting the earth, stopping deforestation and slowing/stopping the carbon emissions Oilyboyd points to, can save this =beautiful= planet from slow and wretched demise. Your political rants have zip to do with the important themes being pressed here.

  • Are you kidding? 1st off Communism, is not a person or a people. Unlike what you have been taught, Communism is nothing more than a social ideology like Capatalism, not a monolithic and rutthless conspiracy as he stated. He finished that speech by stating he was attempting to warn the american people. Well by 1961 the country was already fully aware of this so called evil "Communism". And are u serious? Communist Russia and Lenin were funded by the British Arm of the Rothchilds Family.

  • For some reason u seem to think that if enough people agree on something that it must be true despite the fact that history has proven this to be one of the most foolish of ideas. Depletion and a gapping hole in the ozone are not the same my friend. The public was told there was a massive HOLE. That's fact. For example do u really think the car industry can't do any better than a hybrid? We have been lead in this direction so that an inevitable solution of "Global Governance" could be instituted

  • Kennedy was talking (in 1961) about communism, which, as it turned out, while certainly ruthless, was not a monolithic conspiracy. Nor was it run by the Rockefellers, the Rothschilds, or the Black Nobility of Europe. Your point?

  • Yeah ludicrous huh? Wet dream for the terminally gullible, huh? Is that right? Well who exactly do you think John F. Kennedy was talking about when he stated the quote below. Who? And I'm being serious. So who? Oh yeah, my bad, he must of been just as gullible as the rest of us too, huh? Or was he joking?

  • "For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence. On infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice... It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations".
