Chan and kun can actually by used both for guys and girls, just not often.
But you are right that most of the time, chan is female, and kun is male.
Example of:
Female "kun"would be from like when a chief talks to his female colleague, but we see "san" here more often.
Male "chan" would be if this girl knows this guy very well, and many times is older than him; she could call him by chan. You will often see this in anime with childhood friend settings.
