Realtime is a nationwide cost effective program that translates speech-to-text notetaking services within seconds as an accommodation for middle and high school students with a wide variety of learning, language and hearing disabilities using off-site captionists.
o RROC utilizes readily available equipment (RROC software, IBM Compatible PC, Reliable Internet Connection, microphone system).RROC makes captioning services available via the Internet to virtually any location and the resulting text can be displayed on a television screen, computer monitor, or projected on a large screen for individuals or for the entire classroom.
o Has a short, 1-3 second delay allowing access to information and participation in "realtime".
o Uses a flexible scheduling system, allowing captioning services to be delivered on demand with minimal requirements.
o Provides a permanent record that can be saved at the event site or shared with participants by email.
o RROC digitizes the audio at the presentation site and transmits it over the Internet to an off-site captionist. The captionist transcribes the text and transmits it back to the site where it can be displayed for individuals, small groups, or the entire audience.
o At the event site, the presenter uses a microphone that is connected to a computer running the RROC viewer program. RROC sites have successfully used a wide range of microphones including expensive wireless systems, inexpensive FM microphones from Radio Shack.
o The microphone feeds audio into the computer's sound card. RROC software digitizes the audio and compresses it before it is sent over the Internet to the off-site captionist working on a computer running the RROC caption program. The captionists computer decompresses the audio and plays it over the speakers. In turn, the captionist transcribes the audio and the RROC software transmits the text back to the event site where it is displayed by the viewer program. A variety of display strategies can be used that make the text available for individuals or the entire classroom.
o Remote Realtime Online Captioning (RROC) system was developed by the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities at Minot State University. We have successfully been providing notetaking services for 9 years.
Why would you be interested in RROC?
o RROC allows school districts to carry out mandated equal access to services and programs by providing persons with disabilities access to information and the ability to participate in classroom activities.
o Provides an option for persons with disabilities in rural communities.
o Is cost effective (relatively low cost compared to other support services).
o It allows students to more fully participate in classroom lectures, assignments and discussions.
o Daily availability of classroom lecture notes, daily assignments, project and testing dates as presented by teachers.
o Enhanced notes for studying.
Cost:
o RROC notetaking services are at $31.00 per hour. This cost includes:
Training to the Organizational (school) Contact on usage, procedures, technical issues and testing of the RROC software and connectivity.
New student enrollment and scheduling services each semester.
RROC Website with valuable support information.
One year storage of activity records for each event.
The ability to have notetaking services for 1 student at $31.00 and have notes for an entire classroom or special services who aid in one on one tutoring service (they will have the actual notes of what was taught in that class as a resource for 1 or many students as well).
How ironic! This video about captioning isn't even captioned! SO much for accessibility!
