You sure cannot shut down great players like Kobe Bryant. But what you can do, is to slow them down and make them work hard for every shot, every little point. That is what Shane Battier is doing. He doesn't try to block Bryant's shots. He just tries to make him a jumpshooter and put a hand in his face so that he rushes his shot and cannot have a clean look.
