A Plainfield animal control officer who fell to the ground last week while responding to a call about an out-of-control pit bull died on Thursday.

On Monday, animal control officers from across Connecticut will gathering to remember their colleague, Theresa Foss, 47.

Foss, 47, died at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The death was NOT the result of the incident on Sept. 29, according to Charles Gagne, of Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home in Jewett City. It is still not clear how she fell.

Foss had responded to a home on Green Hollow Road after a report that an aggressive pit bull trapped a family inside their home.

At the time, Police Chief Robert Hoffman said Foss sustained a head injury when she was knocked down. Hoffman said Foss was standing next to her vehicle and its not known whether she hit her head on the ground or on the vehicle. The dog did NOT bite Foss, Hoffman told the Norwich Bulletin .

The dog's owner, David Coombs said he killed the dog and buried it in Canterbury when he realized it was his dog that had been involved in the incident.

Foss had been at Yale-New Haven since the incident, but hospital officials are not offering any more details about her health at the time of her death.

Plainfield police released a statement Thursday, reporting Foss death with great sadness.

Calling hours for Foss will be Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home in Lisbon. Her funeral is Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Lighthouse Church of God in Plainfield.

Karen Jones, a spokeswoman for the Connecticut Municipal Animal Control Officers Association, says Foss is believed to be the first animal control officer in Connecticut to die in the line of duty.

  • i would like you to know that u are an ignorant son of a bitch. if this was your mother you would probably feel a bit diffrent. i had known this woman for many years, she was a friend, my boyfriends mother, my cheerleading coach and the animal control officer. Iets make one thing clear the family did not release any information. You were not there, she went there that night to protect a family. She was fine beforethe attack and whatever she suffered from occured from the attack.

  • @xokayybabyy ...I thought a lot about my response to this. I am an ignorant sob because I decided to record an article about an AC officer who responded to a Pit Bull complaint, information was sketchy, and now she is no longer. If the investigators confirmed and verfied that the dog somehow caused her death, then the updated report should be out there.

Fact is, I reported this almost a year ago. I'm sure investigators have found more evidence since then. If you have them, please share.

  • so I can update my video on YouTube. As for the name calling......I understand your standpoint seeing as you actually knew this victim personally. And for that, I apologize for any negative things that I may have said.

  • She still died as a result of a pit bull attack. While the dog did not bite her, if that pit was not loose, not behaving aggressively, and did not charge her, she may never have fell, and died...

  • Hemi----My man!! whats up dude!

Still not doing research before you type, eh?

A funeral director says the womans death was not releated to the encounter with the dog.

  • wow.... dude you need to have a little respect for her family i knew her personally and i think people like you and makin videos like this should be banned from youtube have a little respect for the people that passed away and there familys

  • What I can say in response to all this is that if the pit bull wasnt attacking MY SISTER, The man she was trying to help wouldnt have shot the dog. Correct? Thats what I thought. That man requested help from ap it bull that was being aggressive and would even let him open his door to his home. She responded to the call to help him and the dog charged her. The man must have thought she was in severe danger to come running out and shoot the dog. Before you make any videos, check your facts.
