almost positively this is a door lock module problem - common vw problem - does the puddle light on the bottom corner of the door light up when the door is open? If not the interior lights will not light up with the door open either.

faulty door switch i had the same prob on my 2000 passat took out the door switch and resolder the broken connection check out info on this on passatworld . com

just had a similar problem on mine with an after market remote locking system the catch had slipped down the locking bar meaning when it unlocked the motor would not open fully causing it to close again therefore locking the door... dunno if this helps though
