I am really digging back into my roots here! The Dolphin Jazz Band was formed by a group of fellows mostly from the Hastings Grammar School and we began to play in earnest in 1955. Six years later, having laboriously managed to master our instruments sufficiently, we persuaded the now defunct Vintage Jazz Music Society Records to record us on December 17th 1961 in Hanwell, Middlesex.
As that is almost 50 years ago, this youtube is my way of commemorating the event! So here is one of the tracks from the recording VEP 12. (extended play 45 rpm)
Players are: Peter Treger - trumpet; Chris Watford - clarinet; Brian Towers - trombone; John Griffiths - string bass; Alan Whitmore - drums; John Collinson - piano and Ted (Brian) Bishop - banjo. There was a pub called the Dolphin in Hastings and the band was named either by Chris or Peter or perhaps both!
The tune, "Parkway Stomp" is very loosely based on the1928 recording by "Albert Wynn's Gut Bucket Five"
The early photos are from the recording studio, which was supervised by Brian Rust, Steve Lane and John Wadley doing the engineering. One of the photos shows Brian Rust and Steve Lane
In those early days we had lots of time to practice - no mortgages; no wives; no kids, often no money either!
I wonder how many people remember us from those days?

Good sounding group Brian. Very tight. Nothing produces a hotter sound than young men's testosterone powering the music. Best wishes, John Reid

Many thanks for this Berty. And, oh boy! -the photos really capture those times and would stand alone in my "archive of the UK N.O. Revival"
Great stuff, Clive.
