@GhibliOriginals Opening the top projects the sound, much like some people will place a cupped hand around their ear to inject sounds... or around their mouths when they mean to yell to help project the sound in one particular direction. Think of sound as water that floats and travels, and then you'll see the way the top directs the sound in a direction.

@GhibliOriginals If I'm not mistaken it allows the sound to carry better, as the sound can escape through the top versus being contained inside the piano (i'm no expert though, there may be another reason I don't know)

@gnanderson as an other piano noob, does opening the pianos gives the better sound?

This was utterly fantastic! Amazing job cramming all those little orchestral details in so accurately! Bravo!

Amazing stuff. As a total piano noob dont flame for asking this, but why do they need page turning monkeys? Cant they learn it by heart?

The circumstances prevented us from memorizing the piece in time. Sorry! We arranged AND learned this movement in less than a week (we were given minimal time to fill in as composers and performers for John Williams for an event the night before). We tend to value spontaneity and the unexpected over excessive polish. In other words, we're willing to sacrifice memory in favor of raw energy and adrenaline. Besides, the time saved by NOT memorizing can be better spent on creating new projects.
