NEW CHARACTERS - pinyin - tone - meaning

你 - ni - 3rd tone - you

好 - hao - 3rd tone - good

嗎 （Simplified: 吗) - ma - neutral tone - question particle

我 - wo - 3rd tone - I, me

很 - hen - 3rd tone - very

呢 - ne - neutral tone - sentence final particle

也 - ye - 3rd tone - also

你好！- ni3hao3! - Hello!

你好嗎？- ni3hao3ma? - How are you?

我很好。- wo3hen3hao3. - I'm well.

你呢？- ni3ne? - And you?

我也很好。- wo3ye3hen3hao3. - I'm also well.

NOTE: Some of the above 3rd tones sound like 2nd tones because of that double 3rd tone rule, just say it fast and it will come out sounding like a 2nd tone naturally, you'll see.

i still dont understand why ni hao is hello.

a literal translation would be you good

same with Zai jian,which is see you again. not goodbye or bb, but again,

we mandarins or any other chinese dialects dont have a literal translation for bye bye. guess its a cultural clash thing,

p.s Chinese is not a language. Although treated as a language for political reasons by the governments in Beijing and Taipei eager to unify a culturally diverse country.

"Chinese" technically isn't one language, it's a whole bunch of languages referred to as "dialects," even though many of them are so different they could be categorized as completely different languages. But as you say, politics dictate that.

Chinese (Mandarin) is NOT a spelling language. Chinese pronunciations are integrated not sequential. In a spelling language like English, you pronounce the consonants/vowels in sequence according to its spelling order. In Mandarin, you integrate the phonemes (at most 2) together to produce an integral sound. Mandarin has 37 phoneme symbols to form 59 unique phonemes, which are used to generate 417 unique integrated sounds w/ various tones. Mandarin is easy. Pinyin is rubbish.

Pinyin, however, is a terribly bad choice.

The Pinyin developed by the Communist Chinese (originally intended to wipe out the Chinese culture altogether) has not only murdered the Chinese language learning for native Chinese as well as foreigners. It has also muttered native Chinese speakers’ ability to learn a real spelling language, like English. The right way and only way to learn Chinese (Mandarin) is to learn ㄅ,ㄆ,ㄇ,ㄈ.

You have chosen (the traditional Chinese) wisely.

When the "queen 后" becomes the "behind 後" and is also "thick 厚", when the "face 面" becomes "noodle 麵", and when "need 須" becomes "beard 鬚", THEY MUST HAVE LOST THEIR MINDS CONJURING UP the simplified Chinese.

Language expressions have so much to do with the culture of the people speaking that language. 50 years ago, the typical Chinese way of greeting was to ask the other person if he had any meal, because during those trying times it was a blessing to have a good meal and Chinese people have always loved to eat. Similarly, in England, people used to strike up a conversation by talking about the weather, because the elements were probably the daily concerns they had to deal with.
