I'm willing to wager that both Ray Davies and Paul McCartney wish they had written this one.
Classic pop structure and guitar hooks falling out one after the other and the harmonies and the guitar tones.....and THE NOTE !
A Townsend masterpiece in my opinion

Great tune. I remember hearing this as a kid on Detroit radio, and when that "...there once was a note...listen" refrain came on, I was blown away. Such a great part. IF I'm not mistaken, this was one of the few things that came from Pete's "Lifehouse" project.

I think I read that this was actually supposed to be on Quadraphenia. . . but was scrapped. The Odd's and Sods album was made up of some tumes over the years that did make it to any albums. . . They also did a song called "Little Billy" that was written for the American Cancer Society but was never used. . . my 2 cents worth

This song is Godly, a Pinnacle of music if there is one.

@Sunglassesful I learned at a Jazz camp that all of our digital music is "compressed" so that we can fit more music into a Cd or Ipod, or such. So its becoming quantity, not quality. It makes me sad that this is happening, but I congratulate you on noticing this, because many people dont seem to.

I think highly of The Beatles and especially of The Kinks. My first album was "Muswell Hillbillies." Ray was and, and still is a consumate song writer. But there is something about Pete's style of lyrysisym that captures my attention. Both The Who and The kinks are 2 of my favoites.

"We all know success when we all find our own dreams, and our love is enough to knock down any walls. And the future's been seen as men try to realize the simple secret of the note in us all." And this comes from an album of songs that The Who felt didn't make the cut for other albums.

pt1:There once was a note, pure and easy, playing so free like a breath rippling by. The note is eternal, I hear it, it sees me, forever we blend as forever we die. I listened and I heard music in a word, and words when you played your guitar. The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering and a child flew past me riding in a star. As people assemble civilization is trying to find a new way to die. But killing is really merely scene changer, all men are bored with other men's lives.

What album is this version from? I have the one off Who's Next and Who Came First (Townshend's solo album)? This one is a bit more "rough" but I like all the versions!

"Pure and Easy" wasn't originally on Who's Next (1971), but I see they've added it as a bonus track from 1995 on... This version here is the one from "Odds and Sods", a very good album with some creative, lesser-known songs...
