Part two of an interview with David Duchovny from 2001, promoting the film Evolution.

Regarding the discussion at 3:30... I can appreciate righteous indignation at punctuation errors, but I am pretty sure David is wrong in this case. The old guy is not addressing Harrison Ford's character as "English." He is echoing what he said at the beginning of the film and sort of ironically warning him to be careful back in the English world after the time he has spent amongst the Amish. Therefore, there should not be a comma.

  • as a Duchovny fan, I have to paste this quote in order to set straight that OF COURSE, David is RIGHT.. :-) "Television Quiz Shows and Commas Watching quiz shows is another source of grammatical anecdotes. Recently, a minor variation in a comma played a seminal role in such a program. [...] But the producers of the tv show claimed there was a comma after them, so the correct answer was the Ford film.

Commas have monetary power; commas do matter."

  • Hm, that's interesting. I found the clip of him on Millionaire. He's right that there was no comma, but I still think he's wrong about the intent of the line. The Amish guy is not addressing Harrison Ford as English, he's referring to the wider world as English, since the Harrison Ford character has been amongst the Amish for a while and is now returning to the wider world. I believe he gives the same warning to his daughter at the beginning of the film when she is leaving Amish country.
