@mert401 I knew Ralph - recorded with him in 1950 with a small group incl Charlie Mariano and Serge Chaloff under Serge's name. Although Woody's orchestra popularized Early Autumn as an instrumental before Mercer added lyrics, I've always felt that the composition was Ralph's alone.

@ljliljohn - I wish I still had the 3 part Summer Sequence written by Ralph Burns and recorded by Woody Herman when Ralph was Woody's pianist. Toward the end, there is a theme which was the forerunner of Early Autumn, and Stan Getz had a solo on it. I recall playing it for a trumpet player friend who said that Stan's solo was one of the most beautiful solos he had ever heard. I wish I later could have played Woody's recording of Early Autumn for him, because Stan topped it.

Lyrics by Johnny Mercer; originally the last part (of three) of a piece by Ralph Burns called 'Summer Sequence' and recorded by Woody Herman. I have it on the Columbia (budget) Harmony label lp called, appropriately, 'Summer Sequence'. It was then issued as the classic version with Stan Getz. Jo Stafford has a fine vocal version, as does Billy Eckstine. I also have a later Woody Herman version where he (Woody) does the vocal. That's guts, man.

Details of the trombone arrangement bring to mind the first version of this song, an instrumental by Woody Herman's band (Stan Getz did the sax solo). This is one awesome ballad. Ralph Burns, who helped compose it, went on to a great career in film, stage, and elsewhere.
