Sufism - a mystical strand of Islam - originated in the Islamic cultures of Asia and Africa, but it also has a growing following in the U.S. Its growth is attributed in large part to the teachings of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen, a Sufi mystic. To learn more about the man and his teachings, Imran Siddiqui of VOA's Urdu Service visited his mazar - or mausoleum - in the eastern U.S. state of Pennsylvania, which has become a gathering place for many followers of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen.

Islam spreads thru sufism in South East Asia by the beautiful characters of these sufis - kindness, patience, helpful, tolerance, caring and many other good qualities that the prophet has emphasised upon us muslims. That is why most of us Muslims here are very tolerant ppl. We dont judge other muslims as Murtad, Kufur, Fasik and so on. But with the advent of the Salafi and Wahabi movements, many have changed and became judgemental, harsh and critical.

Bawa would not want one to focus on "miracles", saying that only God is the Miracle. The miracle is when we become true Human Beings and live with God's Qualities of Compassion, Tolerance, Love, and treat all lives as our own. The Essence of Truth can be found in all religions, and forgiveness and tolerance are Qualities that are God's Miracles.

As a former Lutheran pastor (11 years), I have had every question answered by Bawa Muhaiyaddeen. I saw him do miracles that Jesus performed. He's off the chart--words can't describe the enormity of his work.
